This article features a successful cable testing and retermination of Ethernet ports in one of the business site in Zionville, IN.
Scope of Work
Our onsite IT support technicians received a service request from a client reporting non-functional Ethernet ports at multiple business site locations. At one of the locations in Zionsville, IN, the initial site visit revealed that five Ethernet cables were identified as open, based on the results from a Klein Tools cable tester. Cables need to be traced from floor drop back to the IT room which require tall ladders.
On the second visit, our team tasked to perform the following:
- To test and re-terminate faulty ports to meet industry standards.
- Validate functionality of all ports (online) with onsite/offsite POC

Our data cabling services in Zionsville, IN arrived onsite to perform the testing and troubleshootuiused Net Prowler, a network cable tester and diagnostic tool that is used to:
- Test and verify Ethernet cables (e.g., pin mapping, length, shorts, opens, miswires, and split pairs).
- Identifying and diagnosing network issues.
- Checking PoE (Power over Ethernet) presence.
- Detecting network devices (via ping or network scan).
It comes with Smart Remote Modules to help our onsite IT technicians to test and identify multiple cable runs from a single location. Each Smart Remote has a unique number or identifier (#1, #2, #3…), so the tester can match each remote to a specific cable easily. This also help verify pin mapping, miswires, shorts, opens, and split pairs from the remote end.
Based on the test results, 2 out of 6 ports failed due to wiring issues.
The onsite IT support technician re-terminated the two cables and performed a retest, confirming that both ports passed successfully. The team also verified Internet connectivity, which tested successfully.
