Project Scope and Planning

Our team of onsite IT support in Louisville, KY received a service request for the following scope of work.

1. Install three (3) Cat6 drops:
   – One drop was routed into a specified room with no attic access, requiring alternative cable routing solutions.
   – Two additional drops were designated for wireless access point (WAP) installations.
2. Install two (2) wireless access points (WAPs)
3. Install and configure PoE injectors
4. Terminate, test, and label all Cat6 drops at both ends
5. Brought all drops online and verified connectivity
6. Connectivity was validated with both onsite and offsite Points of Contact (POC)

Project Execution

To kick-off the Data cabling in Louisville, KY, our team conducted a walkthrough to identify drop locations, assess cable paths, and determine the best approach for the room with no attic access.

1. Cat6 Cabling in Louisville, KY

Running cable to room location without attic access posed a unique challenge. Our team creatively routed the two Cat6 drops through alternative pathways outside the premises using flexible conduit. They used commercial-grade Cat6 plenum cable to ensure top-tier performance and fire safety compliance. The remaining two drops were routed for ceiling-mounted WAPs. Each Cat6 drop was carefully terminated using with RJ45 connectors and punched down at the patch panel.

We then performed Cable testing to all terminations end-to-end using Klein Tools LAN Scout Jr. 2 to ensure no miswires or shorts. Labelled each end of the cable runs according to best practices and site documentation standards.

2. Wireless Access Point (WAP) Installation in Louisville, KY

The two wireless access points were securely mounted to the predetermined location on the ceiling. Their Cat6 connections were routed to a centralized location where PoE injectors were installed.

A staff workstation originally located at the front desk was securely relocated to other specified room where one cable drop is installed. Once all physical connections were completed, we brought each drop online. Our team conducted connectivity checks with both the onsite IT contact and an offsite POC, ensuring all WAPs and workstations were active and performing as expected.

Project Outcome

The installation project was completed successfully. As a result of the structured cabling and wireless setup, the client now benefits from fast and reliable wired connections throughout the site, as well as expanded and seamless wireless coverage through the newly installed access points. The use of PoE injectors allowed for clean, efficient WAP installation without the need for additional electrical outlets.
